About & limits
MarxBase collects gene–phenotype results for Kluyveromyces marxianus metabolic engineering. Release 1.0 (2026-10-20) holds 651 results (524 findings, counting a multi-gene combination once): 548 positive, 77 negative, 26 context-dependent, from 174 papers.
Limits
- Results come from paper abstracts only. In a re-run on reviewed papers the extraction recovered roughly 72–83% of the results a person had found; it is weakest for heterologous protein or enzyme expression and promoter or signal-sequence work. A strain is recorded for only about a third of results.
- Temperature, scale and other conditions are recorded only when the abstract states them.
- Some gene names are enzyme or protein labels used by authors, not gene symbols; they are marked. Some K. marxianus genes have several copies and the paper does not say which one was used; they are marked as undetermined.
- Negative results are scarce in abstracts, so absence of a failed attempt is not evidence that it worked.
Reporting a problem
On a result, gene, paper or strain page, Report or suggest sends a message to the MarxBase maintainers: something looks wrong, a field should change, a result is missing, or a gene identifier is known. Messages are anonymous unless you add a name or email so we can reply, are read only by the maintainers and are never shown on this site. A suggestion changes nothing by itself; the maintainer checks it against the paper before any change reaches a later release.
